Defederation Cost
What actually goes into the cost — and why it's a fundamentally smaller number than a full migration.
Defederation cost gets confused with migration cost more often than it should. They're structurally different: a migration moves data between environments; defederation removes a management layer from a tenant that doesn't change. That difference is exactly why defederation is typically far less expensive than people assume going in.
Why defederation costs less than a migration
Migration cost scales with data volume, mailbox count, and complexity because content actually has to move and be validated. Defederation doesn't move any data — your tenant, mailboxes, and files stay exactly where they are. The cost of defederation is driven by administrative and DNS work, not by how much email or how many files your organisation has. A company with 500 mailboxes and one with 15 mailboxes face a similar defederation scope, which is not true of a migration.
The two cost components
Microsoft 365 licensing (ongoing). Once defederated, you're billed directly by Microsoft rather than through GoDaddy. Depending on which plan you move to, this can be similar to, lower than, or higher than what GoDaddy was charging — direct licensing opens up Microsoft's full plan catalogue, including tiers GoDaddy doesn't offer at all.
The defederation service itself (one-time). This covers the administrative work: tenant audit, DNS reconfiguration, licensing setup, execution, and post-cutover verification. Because the scope is narrower than a migration, this is typically priced as a flat project fee rather than per-mailbox.
What actually drives defederation cost up
- Third-party integrations. Email security add-ons (like Advanced Email Security), archiving services, or connected apps that need to be reconfigured or reconnected post-defederation add scope beyond a straightforward DNS and admin change.
- DNS complexity. If DNS is hosted somewhere other than GoDaddy, or if there are custom mail routing rules, additional planning is needed to sequence changes correctly.
- Number of custom domains. Organisations with multiple verified domains on the tenant have more DNS configuration to validate than a single-domain setup.
- Urgency. A defederation that needs to happen on a compressed timeline (rather than scheduled normally) can carry a premium, the same way most urgent professional services do.
DIY vs a managed defederation
Microsoft's own process defers to GoDaddy's official defederation procedure, and both companies are explicit that unofficial or improvised steps risk breaking sign-in to core services. A DIY defederation has no direct cash cost beyond staff time, but that time cost is real, and the risk of a sequencing mistake — like the SPF/DKIM and password-reset issues covered in our troubleshooting guide — is higher without someone who has done this before managing the sequence.
Getting an accurate number
Because defederation cost depends more on configuration complexity than headcount, a generic quote without looking at your specific tenant is usually wrong in one direction or the other. A short discovery call — checking your current DNS setup, any third-party integrations, and domain count — gets you an accurate number rather than a rough guess.
