Tenant-to-Tenant
Migration

Consolidate or restructure Microsoft 365 tenants following a merger, acquisition, or divestiture — with mapped identities, migrated data, and maintained email continuity throughout.

Overview

What this migration involves

Tenant-to-tenant migrations are among the most complex operations in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. They require moving mailboxes, SharePoint sites, OneDrive content, Teams data, and security groups between entirely separate M365 environments.

CloudyNex plans tenant-to-tenant migrations with a formal identity mapping phase — establishing exact relationships between source and target users, groups, and permissions — before a single byte of data moves.

What we migrate
  • Exchange Online mailboxes and archives
  • SharePoint Online sites and document libraries
  • OneDrive for Business content
  • Teams channels, chats, and files
  • Security groups and distribution lists
  • Cross-tenant email routing during migration

What makes this migration complex

01
Identity mapping complexity

Every user, group, and permission in the source tenant must be mapped to an equivalent in the target. Mismatches break access to migrated content and create support issues post-migration.

02
Cross-tenant email routing

During migration, users exist in both tenants simultaneously. Mail routing between tenants must be carefully managed to prevent delivery failures and user confusion.

03
Teams and SharePoint dependencies

Teams channels have deep dependencies on SharePoint. Moving Teams data requires understanding and maintaining these relationships across tenant boundaries.

Our Process

How we run the migration

01 — Audit
Tenant audit
Full audit of both tenants — users, groups, data volumes, SharePoint architecture, Teams, and licensing.
02 — Mapping
Identity mapping
Every user, group, distribution list, and shared mailbox mapped between source and target tenant.
03 — Coexistence
Cross-tenant routing
Cross-tenant mail routing configured so both tenants communicate cleanly during the migration period.
04 — Pilot
Pilot migration
Selected group migrated to validate identity mapping, mail flow, SharePoint permissions, and Teams access.
05 — Cutover
Batch migration
Users migrated in planned batches. MX updates, Autodiscover updates, and client reconfiguration managed per batch.
06 — Hypercare
Post-migration
7-day priority support. Source tenant maintained until all users verified and project signed off.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Typically four to twelve weeks depending on data volume, user count, and environment complexity. The identity mapping phase is critical and cannot be rushed.
Yes. We configure cross-tenant routing so users in both tenants can email each other normally throughout the migration period.
Teams channels, files, and chat history can be migrated to the target tenant. We maintain channel structure and SharePoint file relationships. Some limitations apply to private chat history.
