GoDaddy Microsoft 365
Defederation: The Complete Guide
What GoDaddy Microsoft 365 defederation is, why businesses need it, and exactly what the process looks like from start to finish.
If you bought Microsoft 365 through GoDaddy, you may have noticed that your admin experience does not match what Microsoft's own documentation describes. You are missing settings. Your IT consultant encounters access restrictions. Certain features are unavailable. This is not a bug — it is the direct result of how GoDaddy manages Microsoft 365 on behalf of its customers. The solution is called defederation, and this guide explains exactly what it is, why it matters, and what the process looks like from start to finish.
What is Microsoft 365 defederation?
Defederation is the process of removing GoDaddy's management layer from your existing Microsoft 365 tenant, so your organisation has a direct relationship with Microsoft instead. It is not a migration — your tenant, mailboxes, and data all stay exactly where they are. What changes is who controls it: after defederation you have full administrative access and complete control over your email and cloud infrastructure.
The term comes from the federated identity and management architecture that GoDaddy uses to manage large volumes of customer tenants centrally. Leaving that federated environment — defederating — restores full independence.
Why businesses choose to defederate from GoDaddy
The primary reasons businesses pursue defederation are:
Full admin access. Direct Microsoft tenants have complete access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. GoDaddy-managed tenants have a restricted view with certain settings hidden or inaccessible.
Complete feature availability. Every feature included in your Microsoft 365 subscription becomes fully accessible once you are on a direct tenant. GoDaddy's management layer prevents some features from being exposed to customers.
Direct Microsoft billing. After defederation, your licensing is billed directly by Microsoft. This gives you access to Microsoft's full range of subscription options, volume licensing, and partner pricing — none of which are available through GoDaddy.
Security and compliance control. Conditional access, advanced threat protection, Microsoft Defender configurations, and compliance tools are fully controllable on a direct tenant. These are partially or fully restricted on GoDaddy-managed tenants.
Microsoft partner compatibility. Working with a Microsoft partner or managed service provider is significantly smoother on a direct tenant. The delegated admin access model works as Microsoft designed it.
What defederation is not
Defederation is not:
- Changing your email address or domain
- Losing your email history or data
- Cancelling your GoDaddy account entirely
- Switching email providers in the conventional sense
Your domain stays the same. Your email addresses stay the same. Your existing email, calendar, contacts, SharePoint sites, and OneDrive content stay exactly where they are, in your existing tenant — nothing is migrated or recreated. What changes is the management layer — who controls the tenant and how it is administered. For the full breakdown of what changes, see our GoDaddy Microsoft 365 defederation service.
The defederation process step by step
Step 1 — Tenant audit. The process begins with a full audit of your existing GoDaddy-managed tenant: mailbox inventory, SharePoint content, current licensing, and DNS configuration.
Step 2 — Licensing & planning. Direct Microsoft licensing is procured for your existing tenant. The defederation plan and DNS cutover sequence are documented.
Step 3 — Pre-cutover validation. Domain and DNS configuration are validated. Admin access requirements are confirmed ahead of defederation day.
Step 4 — DNS & domain preparation. DNS records are prepared for cutover. Your live mail flow is untouched until defederation executes.
Step 5 — Defederation execution. GoDaddy's federation is removed from your existing tenant, and DNS is updated to point directly to Microsoft. There is no new tenant and no data migration — it's the same tenant, same mailboxes, same data, completed with zero downtime.
Step 6 — Post-defederation hypercare. Priority support for 7 days after cutover. Admin access is confirmed. GoDaddy's management relationship is formally closed.
How long does defederation take?
Because defederation removes GoDaddy's management layer rather than migrating any data, it is far faster than a typical migration. For most small to mid-size businesses, the complete process takes 1–3 business days from kickoff to cutover. The key phases and their typical durations:
| Phase | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Tenant audit | 1 day |
| Licensing & planning | 1 day |
| Pre-cutover validation | 1 day |
| DNS & domain preparation | Same day |
| Defederation execution (cutover) | 1–2 hours (off-peak) |
| Post-defederation hypercare | 7 days |
Licensing setup and DNS propagation are the main factors affecting timeline — not data volume, since no data is migrated.
What about my other GoDaddy services?
Defederation only moves your Microsoft 365 tenant. Everything else you have with GoDaddy — domain registration, website hosting, SSL certificates — is completely unaffected and stays exactly where it is. You can keep your GoDaddy account for those services indefinitely.
